Independent Reading: The Secret LIfe of Bees

For the Independent Reading section of the literature circles, I chose to read a book called The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. This book is about a girl that shot her mother on accident when she was 2, and her dad is abussive, so she runs away to try to go everywhere that her mother went. She finds herself in Tiburn, South Carolina with a family of bee-keeping black women that help her through her journey and take her in as she discovers that they were tied to her mother in many ways. Set in 1964, this book also deals with a lot of racial issues which cause Lily trouble along her way. I chose to read this book because my mom read it and said it was really good, so we rented the movie. The movie features Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, and Dakota Fanning. Even though I already know mostly what happens, it is still an adventure to read the parts in the book that we didn't get to see in the movie. I am glad to be reading this book, and the reasons stated above tell you why.
