Chapter 8: Gift for the Darkness
Jack called a meeting. When this meeting was occurring, Jack decided that he wasn’t going to put up with any of Ralph’s games and nonsense. He decided to leave the tribe. He started a tribe of his own, and Jack’s tribe (Jack and the choir) killed a sow. They put the head of the sow on a stick as a gift to the beast or the darkness, hence the chapter name. This event was already gruesome and full of gore, but what made the entire occurrence even worse was that it took place in Simon's ‘happy place’.
Simon was watching the hunt the whole time from the sidelines. When the event was over, and the pig head was in the middle of the beautiful field, the overall mood changed. The butterflies flew quickly away, and were replaced by horrific bloodsucking flies. The flies filled the frame and sucked the blood out of the smiling pig. Simon entered the field, and the flies turned to him. As Simon sat on the ground in the middle of the horrific swarm of flies, the pig (The Lord of the Flies) began to talk to him.
He advised Simon on numerous things, and began to poison his mind with nonsense. This scene was the most terrifying to me because this shows that Simon is beginning to lose his mind. This is also a terrifying because Simon is hearing that this pig is the beastie, and that the beastie is part of Simon. Simon now believes that he is part of the beastie, and that he can not escape it. The pig also told him numerous other things, and with the pressure of the hallucinations, and the lively bloodsucking insects crawling on his skin, Simon passed out in the middle of the once beautiful, now terrifying scenery.

I agree with you, about that topic being the most terrifying and how Simon is losing his mind. I also think that its terrifying because of all the gruesome details and events that happen. Especially since Simon, the supposedly pure/Jesus like is tainted first.
ReplyDeleteBut I want to know why do u think Simon was the first to be tainted?

ReplyDeleteReally good job! I agree with you about the pig's head talking to Simon. I liked the way you described everything (especially the part about the Lord of the Flies turning Simon's special place ugly). I never thought of that. The only thing I wonder is, how did the pig's head threaten him?
