"Pablo! Oh, my God! Look at her. She's being eaten alive!"
Esmeralda

Significance: I think that this quote shows how this families lives are because Negi's family has to take the floor boards off because they creak and break, and when Negi tries to put them in the fire, termites swarm on her. The termites try to eat her and bite her skin. They cover her body in red dots. This is probably just one of the hardships that this family will have to face throughout the rest of this book. I know I would be totally disgusted.
Personal Connection: This quote relates to me because when my brother was little, he sat down right on a red ant hill for a time out. Red ants swarmed all over him and got everywhere you can think of. He was covered in brigh red spots for weeks.
Question: If you told your child to do something, and they got hurt doing it, how would that make you feel?
"Get back to the front yard and let that poor animal be."
"We just wanted to see the eggs."
"You've frightened her. Now she won't give us any more eggs."

Significance: This quote also shows how this family lives because it shows how excited these girls get over a chickens eggs. They are so determined to get the eggs that they try to sneak away from their mother to get them. We can just go buy eggs at the store but this family is so poor that they need all the help they can get. Even though they are at risk of salmanila, they are hungry enough to the point of where they would take that risk.
Personal Connection: I can't say I've ever chased a chicken around, but I have chased other animals to get something that they had that I wanted. My dog is always stealing my socks or my clothes, tissues and paper, plastic and dryer towels, pretty much everything she can get her teeth on, and guess who has to chase her around the back yard at night to get it from her.
Question: If you wanted the hen's eggs, what would you have done to get them if you were in the girl's situation?
